Editor's Point Of View:

Be Particular

By Patti Parish-Kaminski, Editor in Chief

I can't remember a time when I didn't hear the words – be particular. These sage words of wisdom were always told to me by my grandmother, and in August, when we visited her to celebrate her 99th birthday, she once again imparted these words of wisdom to me. And, I knew exactly what she meant. I spent a great deal of time with my Mawmaw and Pawpaw growing up, and while my grandmother is a woman of few words, she made sure that I understood that I should "be particular" and more importantly, exactly what she meant by those words. Now, as an adult, I realize that being particular is clearly the best advice you can give a girl as it transcends to virtually every aspect of your life. To Mawmaw, be particular meant pay attention, be discerning, and think - use the mind God gave you when you make decisions and make smart choices. Always put your best foot forward, play your A game, do your best. Clearly principals that can – and should – be applied to all aspects of a successful life.

The women in this issue have made great strides by being particular. Jeanne Garland's particular sense of style, creativity and design has made her an award winning interior designer with clients throughout the country. She's smart, talented and her clients – and her work – are important to her. Jeanne is particular.

Historian and best selling author Philippa Gregory has made a name for herself in the world of publishing, and in the world of films as one of her best selling books has been made into a feature film. She has chosen to share her love of history and her native country through inspiring, educational and entertaining novels. Philippa is particular.

Her love and compassion for the children of her native India is remarkable, as is Molly Philip. Molly has dedicated her life to providing homes, education and love to the many abandoned Indian children. Rich in spirit, drive and faith, Molly is particular.

While our mission at FOW is to inspire, educate and empower women, we also strive to be particular – to put our best foot forward and to pay attention to the input from our readers and advertisers. We appreciate your feedback, and want you to know that when it comes to you and what you value, we're particular. We value the time you spend with us – in reading the magazine, attending one of our events or visiting with us online.

The other piece of advice that Mawmaw always gave me when I left her was be sweet. I never really thought too much about it growing up, but if you combine the attributes of being particular with the attributes of being sweet, you really can't go wrong. Until next time, be particularly sweet.

Stay focused!
