In the last issue, we told you that maintained vehicles are safer vehicles. But how do you find an automotive repair professional that you can trust to perform this important vehicle maintenance? A Google search of “how to choose an auto repair shop” found 6,140,000 results. So clearly, the internet is not the place to start!
Your relationship with your auto repair professional is much like your relationship with your doctor. It is their job to diagnose and treat your car. Additionally, your doctor likely knows you before you ever get sick. He helps you maintain your health and provides a diagnosis based on his relationship with you and his knowledge of your health history. The same should be said for your automotive repair shop. Shop around for a repair facility BEFORE you need repairs. Ask for references and follow up with them. You wouldn’t see a new doctor without a reference or a personal recommendation from a friend. So ask around. Do the legwork. It is worth your time.
Here are specific things that Craig Popp of First Tire & Automotive recommends you look for when you are searching for an auto repair “doctor”:
1. Look for the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) emblem. Automotive technicians must undergo training and testing every five years to maintain their ASE certification.
2. Call the Better Business Bureau and check a shop’s reliability and performance.
3. Ask about the facility’s local and national warranty programs. Such warranties cover parts and labor for at least 12 months or 12,000 miles (First Tire & Automotive offers a 24-24 local warranty to its customers).
4. Ask about the facility’s diagnostic equipment. Is it up-to-date? Are the technicians trained to use it properly?
5. Make sure a written estimate is provided prior to letting the shop begin any repair.
Craig says, “There is an old saying, ‘Quality is not expensive, it’s priceless.’” This is true when looking for an automotive repair professional. Don’t shop for price alone. “Remember that you’re not just paying for the cost of the part and the time it takes to install it, but you’re also paying for the professionalism and technical expertise of the technician.” A good automotive repair facility will stand behind its work and if they should make a mistake, they will do whatever it takes to correct it. That is customer service at its’ best.
