Would it surprise you to learn that keeping up with scheduled maintenance on your vehicle could mean the difference between life and death? According to recent studies, 5 percent of all motor vehicle fatalities are caused by automobile maintenance neglect. To be sure that your vehicle is up to the highest safety standards, consult your automotive repair professional. Not only will your vehicle be safer, but performing the following preventive maintenance regularly can save you money down the road.

The simplest and least expensive maintenance item is an oil change. Performing this regular service can improve not only your vehicle’s safety, but its gas mileage and overall performance. Most every vehicle needs an oil change every 3,000 to 6,000 miles. A good, full-service automotive repair shop will also perform a full inspection of your vehicle, including checking the tire pressure, wiper blades, engine belts, engine fluid levels (including brake, transmission, power steering, antifreeze and windshield washer) and air filtration system. Be sure to ask them to check your vehicle’s battery cables and posts for corrosion. Another critical safety check is your vehicle’s lighting system including your headlights, turn signals, brakes and taillights. The State of Texas requires that all vehicle lights be functional in order to pass its annual safety inspection. However, you should check your lights more than once a year.

Regular maintenance will keep your vehicle at peak performance and can also save you money. “We frequently have customers come in complaining of transmission problems caused by lack of maintenance,” says Craig Popp, owner of First Tire & Automotive. “It’s no fun to have to tell them that by simply keeping their fluid maintained they could have avoided a transmission repair that costs between $2,000 and $6,000.”

It is also very important to make sure that your automotive service professional is equipped to update your vehicle’s computer system. These computer “reflashes” ensure that all of your vehicle’s safety and operational systems are up to date with the latest manufacturer safety and vehicle performance standards.

Keeping your vehicle maintained is as important as regular check-ups with your family doctor. So make your vehicle’s health a priority for the sake of you and your family’s safety.
