Summer is around the corner, so here are some tips from editorial stylist Stevie Benoit to help make the most of what God gave you.
Humidity Fighters for Your Face
It’s HOT! What’s a girl to do? We southern girls need to find ways to combat the heat and humidity. Here are some HOT-WEATHER HELP for easy make-up and hair.
It is hard to wear as much make-up as you usually might, so lighten up! Try these simple tricks that will play up your skin, cheeks, eyes and lips.
Try a mineral-based liquid or cream foundation that will go on sheer. You can add more coverage if you need it. They look natural and wear well in high heat. (Liquid Powder Mineral Make Up or Sheer Mineral Tint by MiAmore Cosmetics.)
Powder doesn’t handle sweat well. Instead, choose a cream blush, which skin easily absorbs. Apply to fingertips and tap on apple of your cheeks for a long-lasting rosiness.
Easy on the eyes. Two light coats of mascara, and a light hand with shadows and liners.
Go for lighter, sheerer colors now for luscious lips. Try a sheer lip tint with SPF to protect from the heat and sun.
Help for Humidity and Hair
Straight, fine hair goes flat, and curly wavy hair gets frizzy and wild in summer humidity. Thankfully, science has done wonders with hair products, and there are specific products that help even the most challenged tresses.
Coarse/Curly hair needs extra moisture to combat pouf. Double the amount of leave-in conditioner, or try a moisture rich masque to calm frizziness. The new treatment line from Bumble and bumble is in, and the Quenching Shampoo and Conditioner and Masque helps this hair type.
While Normal/Wavy hair is damp, run a curl-enhancing cream from the middle of the shaft to the ends and scrunch. Don’t touch it again until it is fully dry- the more you mess with it, the frizzier it gets.
Apply a styling mist (like Paul Mitchell Thickening Spray) to Fine/Wavy hair before you blow dry for a straight look. To add volume, spritz with mist and twist into ringlets. When hair is mostly dry, shake out for fantastic waves.
For Fine/Straight hair, try a root-lifter at the base and comb through entire length of hair. Section hair to blow dry starting in the nape. Use velcro rollers when dry. Finish with a humidity resistant spray like Coiffant.
Summertime Looks that Beat the Heat
A low ponytail - Slick back hair with a pomade and gather it low in the nape. Divide hair in three sections and wind each around a curling iron. Drag fingers through the ringlets for a lived-in look.
The double braid - Part hair down the middle or diagonally back. French braid both sides and twist the ends into a low bun.
Rumpled waves - Saturate the ends of air-dried hair with Surf Spray by Bumble and bumble. Twirl 2” sections into tight twists and hit with a blow dryer for 10 seconds. Scrunch the ends and make a zig-zag part.
