Billed as an above-par girlfriends’ escape—a mostly ladies’ answer to the mostly men’s charity golf tournament—Fredericksburg’s Boys & Girls Club Shopping Tournament is held every September. The homegrown event, set for September 10-11 this year, began in 2004 to benefit the Boys & Girls Club (BGC) of the Texas Hill Country. It’s also intended to provide an economic stimulus for Fredericksburg merchants at a traditionally slow period in one of the state’s top shopping destinations. With the state of the economy recently, the tournament is setting out to also provide a good excuse for groups of girlfriends to do what they really want to do, but might have more trouble rationalizing these days: shop. And, these shoppers are shopping for a cause. The event benefits the BGC which provides local youth and children an affordable, supervised place to go during out-of-school hours. “We applaud the efforts of the Shopping for a Cause committee in creating such a unique, fun-filled opportunity to support not only the BGC but the Fredericksburg community as well,” said Patti Parish-Kaminski, Editor in Chief, Focus on Women. “Our ‘Ultimate Girls’ Club’ team will be there in full pink regalia – ready to shop – in support of this incredible event.” The tournament sparks competition not only among shoppers. Merchants contend not only to attract the big spenders but also for Shoppers’ Choice awards, seeking to outdo each other in providing an over-the-top shopping experience. The shopkeepers can ply shoppers with food and drink, coupons and gifts in hopes of votes. While players traditionally vie for top-scoring places in tournaments, Shopping for a Cause is one tournament where everybody comes out winners.
